Valleywide Veterinary Services

My passion for agriculture began as a young teen when my family was moved to an eight acre parcel in a south shore suburb of Boston where, with the help of my Dad and scavenged lumber from our local dump, I restored an old chicken coop. I raised thirty hens, gathered a flock of ducks, started a vegetable garden and was soon in the egg and vegetable business. During my college years I spent three summers as an apprentice with master gardener Eliot Coleman, studying the art and science of intensive organic vegetable production in Harborside Maine.

Upon graduation, with degrees in biology and anthropology, I was hired to manage a small diversified organic farm in the hills of southern Ohio. Here I was challenged by a steep learning curve raising beef, hogs, poultry, and small fruits as well as operating and maintaining farm machinery. Enthralled with livestock, I continued my education at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

I practiced large animal medicine in Pennsylvania and Maine before settling in the southern Champlain Valley of Vermont. I finally acquired my own farm in 1991 and became a partner at Valleywide Veterinary Services, a full service food animal practice, in 1999. Having experimented with different species and management systems, I currently raise dairy replacement heifers on contract and maintain a small herd of Boer goats for the New York City restaurant market. I have been the consulting veterinarian for Vermont Beef Producers for over twenty years and have consulted for USAID in Eastern Europe on prevention and management of infectious diseases in cattle.
